A Higher Companionship

I would like to share with you all one lesson of the thousands of lessons that I’ve learned from studying the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him).  This lesson comes from the last moments of his blessed life.

Towards the end of the life of the Prophet (pbuh), he had access to everything that the dunya could have offered him.  He was the leader of the entire Arabian Penninsula; his followers loved him and were willing to die for him in a second’s notice; had he wanted he could have lived in a palace and live a luxurious and lavish lifestlye.  But this was not the way of the Prophet (pbuh).

He spent his life in the service of his Lord and in the service and assistance of mankind.  And when he accomplished his mission and established the deen of Allah on this earth, he was ready to go back to his Lord.

As he was on his deathbed in the loving arms of his wife…one of the last things he said was “Rather, I prefer a Higher Companionship”.  Meaning that he had his fill of this dunya and he preferred to go back to Allah and be in His Divine Companionship.  Subhanallah.

When was the last time that we thought about preferring the Companionship of Allah then the things of this world?

The prophet (pbuh) in an earlier part of his life said “Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet them”.

When was the last time we thought about our meeting with Allah?  And more importantly, when was the last time we yearned and thought about looking forward to our meeting with Allah?

Most of us do that out of fearing Him and his Punishment….and that is a good thing.  But I advise myself and you all to also think about how amazing it would feel to just be in the presence of Allah, and to think about seeing His Blessed Face.

When we think about it in that way….we will really look forward to our meeting with Him inshallah.

So as followers of our beloved messenger, we want to follow in his example, which is to:

  1. Live lives of great purpose
  2. Work throughout our lives to establish the deen (religion) within our own lives, our families and our communities.
  3. When our time comes…..to go back to Allah…..That we prefer His Companionship to the things in this dunya (world).

I ask Allah to connect our hearts to Him the Most High and the Sunnah (way) of the Prophet (pbuh).

I ask Allah to bless us to live lives of substance, depth and servitude.

And I ask Allah to allow us to see His Blessed Face and enjoy His Divine Companionship in the next life.

Ameen.
