What’s Love Got to Do With It?

For those of you who are old enough to know where I got this title from, I apologize because I know the song is now playing in your mind.  But I could not come up with a more appropriate title for this post. 🙂

In the grand scheme of life, does it matter who you love?  As people of consciousness, and in particular people of God consciousness, does love have anything to do with the ultimate realities of our existence?  As Tina Turner so eloquently put it: What does love have to do with it?

I’ve now come to understand that love actually has a lot to do with it.  As a matter of fact, I can go as far as to say that love is at the heart of, or at least should be at the heart of, how and why we choose to live our lives on a daily basis.  So what exactly makes me say that?

I say that because of two statements: one made by the Prophet peace be upon him and one made by the great Islamic scholar Ibn Taymiyyah (may God’s mercy be upon him).  Let’s start off by looking at the statement of Ibn Taymiyyah and then end off with a bang by discussing an amazing and heart warming statement from the Prophet peace be upon him.

Ibn Taymiyyah gave a famous analogy in which he compared the believer to a bird.  He said that the believer must live his or her life with two wings…a wing of fear and hope.  The believer is one who lives his or her life balancing the fear of God’s punishment and the hope of His Reward.  But Ibn Taymiyyah didn’t stop there, he continued.

He goes on to say that as the head of the bird guides it and steers its direction, so too does love guide and steer the life of the believer.    It is love that determines the direction of the believer’s life and it is love that leads the believer to look forward to his or her ultimate meeting with their Beloved.

This leads me to our second and even more profound statement.

Narrated in the books of Bukhari and Muslim, it is said that a man asked the Prophet peace be upon him, “When is the Hour (of Judgment)?” The Prophet asked him, “What have you prepared for it?” He replied, “Nothing, except that I love Allah and His messenger.” The Prophet told him, “You are with those whom you love.”

Wow…what a beautiful statement!  In the next life…we will be with those whom we loved.  And if we truly are believers then the love that we have for God and His Messenger should far outweigh any other love in our hearts.

I ask Al Wadood (A name of God meaning The Most Loving) to make us amongst those whom He loves.

I ask Allah to increase our love for Him and His messenger peace be upon him.

I ask Al Kareem (A name of God meaning The Most Generous) to reunite us with the Prophet, his blessed companions and those whom we love in Heaven.

Ameen.
